Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups (950 ml) cranberry juice (100% juice, no added sugar)
  • 2 cups (475 ml) pineapple juice (unsweetened)
  • 1 cup (240 ml) orange juice
  • 4 cups (950 ml) ginger ale (not diet)
  • 2 tablespoons (30 ml) fresh lemon juice
  • 1/4 cup (60 ml) simple syrup (optional, equal parts sugar and water)
  • 5–10 pounds (2–4.5 kg) dry ice
  • Ice ring or block (optional)
  • Gummy worms or plastic spiders (for garnish, optional)

Instructions

  1. Make the simple syrup (optional): Combine 1/4 cup (60 ml) water and 1/4 cup (50 g) sugar in a small saucepan. Heat over medium, stirring occasionally, until the sugar dissolves completely. Remove from heat and let cool.
  2. Mix the juice base: In a large pitcher or mixing bowl, combine 4 cups (950 ml) cranberry juice, 2 cups (475 ml) pineapple juice, 1 cup (240 ml) orange juice, and 2 tablespoons (30 ml) fresh lemon juice. Stir well. Taste and add simple syrup if desired.
  3. Chill the juice base: Pour the juice mixture into your punch bowl and refrigerate for at least 2 hours until cold.
  4. Prepare the ice ring (optional): Fill a ring mold or small bundt pan with water and freeze overnight. Add fruit slices or gummy worms for extra flair.
  5. Add the ginger ale: Just before serving, take the punch bowl out of the fridge. Gently pour in 4 cups (950 ml) cold ginger ale. Stir slowly. Add ice ring or block if using.
  6. Prepare the dry ice: Put on thick oven mitts or leather gloves. Using tongs, transfer dry ice to a cutting board. Break into golf ball-sized pieces by wrapping in a clean kitchen towel and gently tapping with a hammer.
  7. Add dry ice to the punch bowl: Using tongs, carefully place 3-4 pieces of dry ice into the punch bowl. Lower gently into the liquid. The fog will start immediately. Add more pieces every 30-45 minutes to maintain the effect.
  8. Serve with caution: Ladle the punch into cups, being careful not to scoop up any dry ice pieces. Tell guests not to eat or touch the dry ice.

Notes

Buy dry ice the same day as your party. Store it in a paper bag in the freezer (not sealed). Never touch dry ice with bare skin. Keep dry ice in the punch bowl only; do not let it get into individual cups. For a longer party, store extra dry ice in a cooler with the lid slightly cracked. Avoid using thin plastic cups; paper or thicker plastic cups work better. Let glass punch bowl come to room temperature before adding chilled juice to prevent thermal shock.
