sparkling strawberry basil mocktail - featured image

A light, bubbly mocktail combining fresh strawberries, basil, lemon juice, and sparkling water for a refreshing and herbaceous summer drink.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup fresh strawberries, hulled and sliced
  • 810 fresh basil leaves, gently bruised or muddled
  • 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
  • 1 cup (8 fl oz) sparkling water
  • 1 tablespoon honey or agave syrup (optional)
  • Ice cubes

Instructions

  1. Wash, hull, and slice about 1 cup (150 g) of fresh strawberries. Muddle half of them to release juice and leave the rest for garnish.
  2. Place 8-10 fresh basil leaves in a mixing glass. Gently press down 5-6 times with a muddler or the back of a wooden spoon to release aroma without breaking leaves into tiny pieces.
  3. Add 2 tablespoons (30 ml) of freshly squeezed lemon juice and 1 tablespoon (15 ml) of honey or agave syrup if using. Stir gently to combine and dissolve the sweetener.
  4. Add the muddled strawberries to the glass and stir gently to mix flavors.
  5. Fill the glass with ice cubes, then slowly pour 1 cup (240 ml) of sparkling water over the mixture. Stir gently once or twice to combine without flattening the bubbles.
  6. Garnish with a few whole strawberry slices and a fresh basil leaf. Serve immediately.

Notes

Use gentle pressure when muddling basil to avoid bitterness. Add sparkling water last and stir gently to preserve bubbles. Fresh lemon juice is preferred over bottled for best flavor. Can prepare strawberry-basil-lemon mix up to 4 hours ahead and add sparkling water and ice just before serving. Frozen strawberries can be used if thawed and drained. For a low-sugar version, omit honey or agave syrup.
