A light, fluffy, and festive patriotic dessert featuring layers of red, white, and blue cotton candy-flavored cheesecake mousse served in individual jars, perfect for summer celebrations.

  • 1 cup (240 ml) heavy whipping cream, chilled
  • 3/4 cup (90 g) powdered sugar, sifted
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp cotton candy flavoring or extract (optional)
  • About 2 oz (55 g) cotton candy floss in red, white, and blue colors
  • Small amounts of red and blue gel food coloring
  • 1 cup (100 g) graham cracker crumbs (optional, gluten-free if needed)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the graham cracker base (optional): Crush 1 cup (100 g) of graham crackers into fine crumbs. Spoon about 1 tablespoon into each jar and press down lightly to create a firm base. (5 minutes)
  2. Beat the cream cheese: In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened cream cheese using an electric mixer on medium speed until smooth and creamy, about 2 minutes. Scrape sides as needed.
  3. Add powdered sugar and flavorings: Gradually add sifted powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and cotton candy flavoring. Beat on low until fully combined and creamy. Avoid overmixing.
  4. Whip the heavy cream: In a separate chilled bowl, whip the heavy cream until soft peaks form, about 3-5 minutes on high speed.
  5. Fold whipped cream into cream cheese mixture: Gently fold the whipped cream into the cream cheese mixture in three additions using a spatula to keep the mousse light and airy.
  6. Divide and color mousse: Separate mousse into three equal bowls. Add red gel food coloring to one, blue to another, leaving the third white. Fold gently until evenly tinted.
  7. Layer the mousse in jars: Spoon a couple of tablespoons of red mousse into each jar, smooth the surface, then repeat with white and blue mousse layers. Chill jars for 10 minutes between layers to help set.
  8. Top with cotton candy floss: Just before serving, garnish each jar with a small tuft of red, white, and blue cotton candy floss.
  9. Chill before serving: Refrigerate the assembled jars for at least 1 hour to let flavors meld and mousse firm up. Cover with lids or plastic wrap if prepping earlier.

Notes

Use softened cream cheese at room temperature to avoid lumps. Chill bowls and whisk for better whipping. Fold whipped cream gently to keep mousse airy. Use gel food coloring to avoid thinning mousse. Add cotton candy garnish just before serving to prevent melting. Graham cracker base is optional for added crunch. Can substitute coconut cream and dairy-free cream cheese for vegan version.
