A quick and easy festive snack mix featuring crispy rice cereal coated in creamy white chocolate with patriotic red, white, and blue sprinkles. Perfect for celebrations and casual gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 9 cups (about 225 grams) crispy rice cereal
  • 12 ounces (340 grams) white chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup (113 grams) unsalted butter
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 1/2 cups (180 grams) powdered sugar
  • 1/2 cup (75 grams) festive patriotic sprinkles (red, white, and blue sugar or nonpareils)
  • Optional: pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Measure 9 cups (about 225 grams) of crispy rice cereal into a large mixing bowl and set aside.
  2. In a microwave-safe bowl, combine 12 ounces (340 grams) of white chocolate chips and 1/2 cup (113 grams) of unsalted butter. Microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring in between, until fully melted and smooth (about 2-3 minutes). Alternatively, melt gently over a double boiler.
  3. Stir 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract into the melted chocolate mixture. Add a pinch of salt if desired to balance sweetness.
  4. Pour the melted white chocolate and butter over the cereal. Gently fold with a wooden spoon or silicone spatula to coat the cereal evenly without crushing it (about 2-3 minutes).
  5. Sprinkle 1/2 cup (75 grams) of red, white, and blue sprinkles over the coated cereal and fold gently to distribute evenly.
  6. Transfer the coated cereal into a large zip-top bag or container. Add 1 1/2 cups (180 grams) of powdered sugar, seal tightly, and shake vigorously until every piece is dusted.
  7. Spread the mixture on a parchment-lined baking sheet or tray to cool completely (15-20 minutes). Once cooled, break apart any clumps gently with your hands.
  8. Store the puppy chow in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week.

Notes

Melt white chocolate in short bursts and stir often to avoid burning or seizing. Use unsalted butter and add a pinch of salt separately to brighten flavor. Fold gently to keep cereal crunchy. If mixture thickens, warm gently again for 10-15 seconds. Store in airtight container at room temperature for up to a week. Variations include swapping half white chocolate for dark or milk chocolate, using gluten-free cereal, adding nuts, or using dairy-free alternatives.
