This easy homemade Uncrustables recipe offers a foolproof technique to create perfectly sealed, soft bread sandwiches with customizable fillings. Ideal for quick snacks, lunches, or picnics, it includes five delicious flavor variations.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 slices white sandwich bread, crusts removed
  • Butter or margarine, softened (for sealing edges)
  • Peanut butter (creamy or chunky)
  • Jam or jelly (strawberry, grape, or favorite flavor, smooth)
  • Cream cheese, softened (plain or flavored)
  • Honey
  • Fresh fruit (thinly sliced strawberries, bananas, or apples, optional)
  • Almond butter or sunflower seed butter (for allergy-friendly options)
  • Powdered sugar (optional, for dusting)
  • Flour (optional, for dusting work surface)

Instructions

  1. Remove crusts from 8 slices of white sandwich bread. Lightly flatten each slice with your hands or a rolling pin to make sealing easier. (About 2 minutes)
  2. Spread about 1 tablespoon (15 ml) of your chosen filling evenly on 4 slices, leaving a small border around the edges. For peanut butter and jelly, spread peanut butter first, then jelly on top. (About 5 minutes)
  3. Place the remaining 4 bread slices on top of the filled slices. Spread a thin layer of softened butter along the edges of the top slice to act as glue. Press edges firmly together with your fingers. (About 3 minutes)
  4. Using a 3-4 inch round cookie cutter, press down firmly to cut the sandwich into a neat circle. Press edges gently again to reseal if needed. Remove excess bread. (About 5 minutes)
  5. Place sealed sandwiches on a baking sheet or plate and refrigerate for 10-15 minutes to firm up and prevent filling leakage. (Optional but recommended)
  6. Repeat the process for additional flavor variations as desired.

Notes

Use fresh, soft bread to avoid tearing. Lightly butter edges before sealing to act as glue. Chill sandwiches after assembly to prevent filling leakage. Avoid overfilling. If bread tears, chill briefly before filling or use slightly thicker slices. Press cutter down firmly and twist slightly for a clean cut. Store in airtight container in fridge up to 3 days or freeze individually for up to 1 month.
