Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour (120g)
  • 3/4 cup hot water (180ml)
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter (28g)
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar (25g)
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 large egg, room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • Vegetable oil for frying (about 2 inches depth)
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar (100g) for coating
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon for coating
  • 1/2 cup Nutella (125g)
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream (60ml)
  • Pinch of salt for Nutella sauce

Instructions

  1. In a medium saucepan, combine 3/4 cup hot water, 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, 2 tablespoons granulated sugar, and 1/4 teaspoon salt. Bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring occasionally.
  2. Remove from heat and immediately stir in 1 cup all-purpose flour until the mixture forms a ball and pulls away from the sides of the pan. Let cool for 5 minutes.
  3. Transfer dough to a mixing bowl. Add 1 large egg and 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon. Beat vigorously with a wooden spoon until smooth and glossy.
  4. Pour vegetable oil into a deep frying pan or pot to about 2 inches deep. Heat to 350°F (175°C).
  5. Spoon small dollops (about 1 tablespoon) of dough carefully into the hot oil or pipe using a piping bag with a large star tip. Fry in batches without overcrowding.
  6. Fry the bites for 2-3 minutes, turning occasionally, until golden brown and crispy. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on a cooling rack set over a baking sheet.
  7. While still warm, toss churro bites in a bowl with 1/2 cup granulated sugar mixed with 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon to coat evenly.
  8. In a small saucepan over low heat, gently warm 1/2 cup Nutella with 1/4 cup heavy cream and a pinch of salt. Stir until smooth and pourable.
  9. Serve churro bites warm alongside the Nutella dipping sauce.

Notes

Keep oil temperature steady at 350°F to avoid greasy or burnt bites. Toss churro bites in cinnamon sugar while warm for best coating. Use a star piping tip for authentic ridges. Warm Nutella gently to avoid seizing. For a dairy-free option, substitute heavy cream with coconut cream and use dairy-free hazelnut spread.
