Ingredients

Scale
  • 1.5 pounds ground beef (80/20 blend)
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder (optional)
  • 8 classic beef or pork hot dogs
  • 8 hot dog buns
  • 8 cheddar cheese slices
  • 8 American cheese slices
  • Lettuce leaves, fresh and washed
  • Tomato slices, ripe and juicy
  • Onion slices (red or white)
  • Pickle slices (dill or bread-and-butter)
  • Avocado slices or guacamole (optional)
  • Ketchup, mustard, and mayonnaise
  • Relish and hot sauce
  • Optional add-ons: bacon strips (cooked crispy), jalapeño slices, grilled mushrooms or sautéed onions

Instructions

  1. Preheat grill to medium-high heat (around 375°F/190°C). If using charcoal, wait until coals are covered with white ash.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine ground beef, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Mix gently without overworking.
  3. Divide mixture into 8 equal portions (~3 ounces each) and shape into patties about ¾ inch thick. Make a slight indentation in the center of each patty.
  4. Place patties on grill and cook 4-5 minutes per side for medium doneness (internal temp 160°F/71°C). Add cheese slices during last minute if making cheeseburgers and close lid to melt.
  5. Grill hot dogs perpendicular to grates, turning every couple of minutes for 6-8 minutes until charred and juicy.
  6. Toast hot dog buns lightly on grill for 30 seconds to 1 minute.
  7. Set up toppings bar with lettuce, tomato, onions, pickles, avocado, bacon, and sauces in small bowls or trays.
  8. Transfer cooked patties and hot dogs to platters and let guests assemble their own burgers and hot dogs.
  9. Keep cooked patties warm in a low oven (200°F/93°C) covered loosely with foil if grilling for a crowd.

Notes

Handle burger meat gently to keep patties tender. Make a small indentation in the center of patties to prevent puffing. Avoid pressing down on burgers while grilling to retain juices. Turn hot dogs frequently for even browning. Keep a spray bottle of water handy for flare-ups. For gluten-free options, use gluten-free buns or lettuce wraps. Vegetarian options include plant-based patties and vegan cheese.
